The Basics: Garlic Kale Chips π§
Prep Time: 10 minutes
Cook Time: 20 minutes
Servings: 4
INGREDIENTS π
1 bunch kale (about 10 stalks)
1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil
1 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1/2 teaspoon ground pepper
1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
INSTRUCTIONS π©πΌβπ³
Pre-heat your oven to 300Β°.
Wash your 1 bunch kale, and pat each individual stalk dry with a paper towel. You want the leaves to be COMPLETELY moisture-free to ensure a crispy end result.
Tear the leaves away from the tough stem into bite-size pieces (about 2-inches wide). Place them in a large bowl as you go.
Drizzle 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil evenly over the kale, and use your hands to gently massage (see below) until the pieces are thoroughly coated and just start to soften.*
Sprinkle 3/4 teaspoons garlic powder, 1/4 teaspoon ground pepper, and 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt over your kale and use your hands to give it one last quick toss.
Take half of the kale and spread into a single layer on an unlined 17β x 11β baking sheet to ensure even baking.
Bake for 20 minutes in your 300Β° pre-heated oven. Rotate your baking sheet half-way through.
Remove from the oven and let sit on the baking sheet for 5 minutes.
Gently place your kale chips in a serving bowl, and repeat the baking process for the second batch (from step #6 on).
* Lowkey a little weird, massaging your kale is worth it because it helps break down some of the tough fibers in the hearty green and make it more tender. Do NOT overdo it or youβll be left with limp, wilted pieces and, well, nobody wants that.
π‘ I stan garlic π§ all the way, but you can season your kale chips with literally whatever youβd like. Some yummy options include ranch seasoning mix, chipotle powder, or sriracha and lime.
The Bougee: Overnight Chocolate Chia Oats π«
Prep Time: 10 minutes
Cook Time: None π
Servings: 4 (1/2 cup servings)
INGREDIENTS π
1/2 cup chia seeds
3/4 cup old-fashioned rolled oats
1 1/2 tablespoon cocoa powder
1 1/2 cup unsweetened vanilla almond milk -OR- 1 1/2 cup unsweetened plain almond milk + 1 teaspoon vanilla extract*
1 tablespoon cacao nibs -OR- mini chocolate chips
1 tablespoon honey -OR- maple syrup
INSTRUCTIONS π©πΌβπ³
In a small mixing bowl, combine 1/2 cup chia seeds and 3/4 cup oats.
Using a sifter to eliminate any clumps, add 1 1/2 tablespoon cocoa powder to the bowl.
Mix as you slowly add 1 1/2 cup unsweetened vanilla almond milk.
Add 1 tablespoon honey and 1 tablespoon cacao nibs and stir a few more times until well-combined.
Divide into (4) serving containers with a lid (may I recommend mason jars? πββοΈ), and chill in the refrigerator overnight.
* Donβt have and/or love almond milk? Use your favorite non-dairy milk instead!
π‘ Mix up your chia pudding the night before, and add your toppings right before you devour it - frozen banana slices and some extra cacao nibs are the best add-ons IMO, but get creative!
The Bite-Sized:
So youβve seen recipes that tell you to rotate whatever youβre baking in the oven somewhere around the half-way mark, right? If youβre thinking nope, then you havenβt read through my Garlic Kale Chips recipe above, what are you doing? π€¨
β¦aaaanyway, thereβs a reason for it and itβs not just a step thatβs added to be extra. Most ovens work in a way that heat rises straight up from the bottom β¬οΈ (these are called conventional ovens). What this means is that the oven is not heating evenly, so there are going to be spots in there that are hotter π‘οΈ than others. Unless you have a convection oven, which actually has a built-in fan that circulates π the hot air all throughout the oven, youβre going to want to get your food moving yourself.
You might have noticed that sometimes youβll have one side of your food come out looking a lot browner than the rest. To ensure your food browns evenly, rotate your baking dish 180Β° half-way through the baking time in your recipe and youβll end up with some fire π₯ food, not the burnt kind.
The Best:
Garlic. Parmesan. Zucchini. Chips. Let that sink in. If all of that sounds great but youβre doubting zucchiniβs ability to hold its own as the star π of a dish, you NEED to try Tasty's garlicky π§, cheesy π§ take on this underrated veggie. π
